Outbreak of E. coli in Southern Ontario

Recebi essa mensagem hoje de manha no meu email e nem vou traduzir:

Outbreak of E. coli in Southern Ontario

Ottawa, November 11, 2008 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is informing the public of its investigation into potential food sources linked to an E. coli outbreak in the Niagara, Halton, Waterloo and Guelph areas of Ontario.

The actual source of the E. coli has not yet been definitively identified. Canadians are reminded that the best way to prevent foodborne illness is by handling their food safely. If you believe you are infected with E. coli you should not prepare food for others; if you must, you are advised to wear disposable gloves.

Food Safety Investigation in Southern Ontario

The CFIA and the Public Health Agency of Canada are working closely with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care as well as local officials to investigate this situation. Once an illness pattern was identified that could be linked to food, the CFIA immediately began its investigation of potential foodborne sources.

Although no common food source has yet been confirmed, local and provincial investigators along with CFIA are studying whether the outbreak is linked to lettuce. The traceback investigation is ongoing to see if any concerns are identified along the supply chain. The CFIA will continue to assess and pursue all other potential sources that may be identified as a result. If a food source is determined, and if there continues to be a human health risk, the CFIA will take appropriate actions which could include removing any remaining product from the marketplace and advising consumers.

For more information, consumers can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).
